For hundreds of years, the people of Ibiza shared only a dozen surnames. And still everyone here seems to be named Mari, Torres or Garcia. Why is that anyway?

For an answer, we drive inland. Away from the crowds and the party scene. Back in time it seems, into old Spain. The further north you go, the more the original Catalan culture emerges. People speak Catalan, unintelligible to our ears, or even ancient Ibicenco. Farms and farmlands alternate, and old women shuffle along the streets with baskets full of just-harvested vegetables or fruits.
And it is exactly here where the origin of the island’s name history lies. In its ancient history. Well before the island gained popularity in the 1960s. Because with the coming of tourists and immigrants from Spain and other countries, who came here to work in the construction and tourist industry, the old Ibicenco are now surpassed by immigrants and their descendants.
Traditionally, only 5 surnames of Catalan origin occurred in Ibiza. Namely those of the Torres family , Mari, Garcia, Tur and Ribas. Of which Garcia is the only Spanish surname. Whereas fifty years ago over 15% of the population wore one of these names, this percentage is rapidly decreasing and now only 2-4% listen to these names.
Further confirmation of the island’s popularity and appeal to tourists and immigrants.
Going on vacation to Ibiza? So don’t forget to drive into the interior, explore the north and look for the real authentic Ibiza. Oh… and have a chat with Mr. Ribas or Mrs. Mari.
